What is Blue Beanie Day?
Blue Beanie Day is a community-driven moment to show support for web standards and digital accessibility. People wear a blue beanie–offline or online–to highlight the need for websites and tools that everyone can use, including people with disabilities. It’s also a chance to share experiences with inaccessible sites or celebrate progress in inclusive design.
Douglas Vos came up with the idea back in 2007, inspired by the blue beanie Jeffrey Zeldman wears on the cover of Designing with Web Standards.
Why does it matter?
Digital access is essential, yet still too many people still encounter barriers online–from unreadable interfaces to tools that don’t work with assistive technologies.
Blue Beanie Day brings attention to these issues and reminds us why inclusive design matters. For someone using a screen reader or needing stronger contrast, a well-designed website can be the difference between taking part and being shut out.
The goal is simple: make sure no one is left behind in the digital world.
